Good luck to England team over in Russia, and particularly Sells endorsee Nick Pope from all the Sells Pro Training team.

It’s one of those great stories that the game of football delivers from time to time.

A remarkable journey from getting released by Ipswich Town aged sixteen, to be making his England debut ten years later and getting on the plane to Russia.

Pope only made his Premier League debut September against Crystal Palace, coming on after 38 minutes, after a severe shoulder injury to Tom Heaton.

In the game Pope made a crucial save, in the last ten minutes, in a one on one with Palace striker Christian Benteke, keeping a clean sheet in a one-nil victory.

Pope took full advantage, establishing himself as Burnley’s number one with some fantastic performances.

He had the second highest shot saved percentage in the Premier League, with 79.4%, the only goalkeeper above him was David De Gea, with 81.2%.

It just goes to show the importance of never giving up and keep working hard and you never know how far you can go. Too often goalkeepers take rejection as final, but if you work hard and are determined to succeed you never know where you might end up.

We were fortunate enough to catch up with Pope, in December in Halifax, and I’m sure that any thoughts of going to Russia were probably a long way off.

He spoke about how he had been released, how playing in for his college and non-league teams had kept him grounded.

For Burnley, he wears the number 29 as that was the number he used for college, not forgetting his football journey.

It’s great to see a great guy succeeding and a real inspiration to all the goalkeepers at Sells Pro Training. Keep working hard because you never know where it might take you…

We have some exciting news to share as the Pro Training scheme starts to take shape!

Goalkeepers from around the world were present at our Easter residential.

Keepers from Australia, Poland, Sweden, Latvia, and Norway attended the course at Ratcliffe College in Leicester, with UK stoppers travelling from as far as Scotland and the Isle of Man.

Goalkeepers worked hard covering all aspects of goalkeeping throughout the week, including; shot-stopping, crosses, one v one and distribution techniques.

Sheffield United’s Simon Moore spent Wednesday with us, having lunch with the students, then coaching them in the afternoon and then taking questions during the evening.

Simon recorded a good deal of content for Sells TV too, so look out for that in the coming weeks.

Northampton Town first team goalkeeper coach Jim Hollman also paid a visit putting on a session utilising his specifically designed Pro Deflect equipment which everyone enjoyed.

We also had the Academy goalkeeper coaching team from Leicester City to take a look at the goalkeepers.

These are a few of the reviews we’ve received:

“I thought an 8am to 8pm day might be a bit too much, but the drills were full of variety and the coaches enthusiasm and positivity meant that the time flew by.

“He loved every day from start to finish.”

Stephen Griffiths

“After taking a couple of hours or so to settle he then rang each night and said how much fun it was and that in itself is worth every penny.

“He returned on Friday and played on Saturday and low and behold got man of the match.”

Gareth Purdy

“Such great staff! “The teens were well looked after, learned a lot and had a great time!

“Theodor was the only Norwegian present, but he made friends easily.”

Anita Fevang

Matt, I and all of the SPT team would like to thank everybody who attended for a hugely enjoyable four days.

New content will be added every Friday via our YouTube channel.

Crystal Palace legend Julian Speroni talks about growing up in Argentina, the sacrifices he made to become a professional and which goalkeeper inspired him.

Bournemouth number one, Asmir Begović, tells us which player he’s faced that’s given him the most trouble.

Burnley number one Nick Pope gives us an insight into how he felt coming off the bench to make his Premier League debut and how he dealt with getting released by Ipswich Town at the age of sixteen.

There are coaching drills from Northampton Town goalkeeper coach James Hollman.

James Hollman is a highly experienced, who worked previously as first team goalkeeper coach at Norwich City, Cardiff City, Ipswich Town and Motherwell.

Among the keepers to have benefitted from James’ coaching are David Marshall, Tom Heaton, Asmir Begović, Richard Wright, Rob Green, Matt Gilks and Darren Ward.

The first Sells Pro Training Residential Camp of 2018 is just over three weeks away.

This will be held at Radcliffe College in Leicester from the 3rd to the 6th April.

We are pleased to announce that Sheffield United goalkeeper Simon Moore will be attending the camp.

Simon will be looking at and interacting with all students whilst on the field, adding his own expertise and coaching tips along the way.

Simon was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year after leading his club to promotion last season.

After an early season injury, Simon returned to the line-up and recently saved a penalty in the Blades 3-1 victory over Reading, with the game delicately balanced at 2-1.

He will be able to pass on his knowledge and give an insight into what it’s like to be a professional footballer via a Q&A session.

In addition to the visit from Simon, there may be some scouts from Premier League and Championship clubs in attendance.

At the time of writing, there are just eight residential places available, though there is the opportunity to add places for further non-residential participants.

All the participants will take part in around three sessions of goalkeeper training each day, so it’s an action packed camp.

The lead coaches on the camp are Matt Nash and James Norton, both have been running goalkeeper residential courses for over nine years.

West Bromwich Albion number one Ben Foster has penned another extension to his Sells Goalkeeper Products endorsement contract.

Foster has worm the brand since 2003 and fifteen years on is still committed to the brand.

“I wouldn’t choose anything else” he said after putting pen to paper.

“The product is absolutely top class and has been all the way through.

“Sells is still the frontrunner when it comes to development, but is not caught up with gimmicks or crazy ideas. It is just the very best materials, with a great design. The gloves are functional and the latex I can always trust to perform.”

Managing Director Adam Sells was delighted to continue the association with Ben; “He has been with us from the very start and as a goalkeeper he epitomises the brand and its values.

“I am absolutely chuffed that Ben continues to work with us. He is a great goalkeeper and a great human being.”

Great to have you with us as always Ben!

Sells Goalkeeper Products are delighted to announce that Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope has signed a five-year deal with the brand.

On signing the deal Pope said; ” It’s an honour and a privilege to become an ambassador for Sells Goalkeeper Products. I absolutely love the brand and its products, so it was an easy choice for me.

“it is important that I feel comfortable and trust what I have on my hands, that’s why it was only ever going to be Sells.”

Our founder and Managing Director Adam Sells is equally thrilled.

“Nick is somebody I have had high hopes for a number of years. He has been nothing short of sensational for Burnley and I believe he will be a strong candidate for the England number one jersey over the coming years.

“Popey is a fantastic lad, with a wise head on his young shoulders and will go to the very top of the game.”

Welcome Nick!

Asmir Begovic has signed a new long-term deal with Sells Goalkeeper Products.

Since joining the brand in 2009, Begovic has been a tremendous ambassador and shares a close relationship with brand owner and MD Adam Sells.

Begovic’s long-term commitment will see him develop a new line of gloves, which will be launched next summer.

The F3 line is being designed with our product guru Mat Booth and Begovic is thrilled to be involved in the development.

“It is a real passion of mine and I am delighted to be involved for many years to come in the development of the brand and its products.

“I cannot wait to see the new gloves hit the market and I hope goalkeepers can identify with what I like in a glove.”

The F3 collection will bear a woven “AB” tab to underline the part Begovic will play in the process.

Managing Director Adam Sells is understandably delighted to continue the relationship with Asmir.

“He really is an exceptional guy. One I really admire. He is a pleasure to be around and I just love his enthusiasm for the brand.”
